Alberic Magnard (1865-1914) Envoi, n.1 from Promenades op.7 for piano Christeph Keller, piano The force of Magnards personality becomes apparent for the first time in his First Symphony (1889-1890) and his first opera, the single-act Yolande (1888-1891), though not without self-conscious prolixity, contrapuntal clotting, and a certain clumsiness overall. Dating from the end of 1890 or beginning of 1891 his song, À Henriette, with its coyly arch Tristanism, documents an unhealthy attachment to the coquettishly entrancing Madame Robert de Bonnières, whose salon he frequented. But with Promenades -- a cycle of seven pieces for piano composed in 1893 -- the style comes into sudden focus with exquisite concision, airy textures, and an atmospheric giddiness achieved through masterly part-writing whose cogency would not, mutatis mutandis, have embarrassed Bach. Marked Tendre, Envoi addresses the collection to a beloved whom we will meet in the final piece, Rambouillet, which bears the performance direction Nuptial and whose conclusion recapitulates the wonderstruck aura of Envois opening. But thats presumptive -- Magnard met Julia Creton in December 1891 and their marriage did not take place until February 15, 1896. On the evidence, their courtship was not merely happy, but worked a transformative alchemy upon Magnard -- the sunny Second Symphony was composed over 1892-1893, while the Quintet for piano and winds, from 1894, radiates manic joy in an utterance intensely high ...
