This Kingfisher was sitting in a pond of a park in an urban area. During the winter Kingfishers come near civilized areas, because the water is not frozen. In this video you can see the bird keeps its head still, balancing on the moving branch. This enables him to accurately measure the distance to the fish in the water. It was taken with a Canon Powershot (very simple digital camera), and attached with a home-made adapter to a 20x telescope. Thank you all for the compliments, I am quite happy with it myself.

The adult male of the western European subspecies, A. a. ispida has green-blue upperparts with pale azure-blue back and rump, a rufous patch by the bill base, and a rufous ear-patch. It has a green-blue neck stripe, white neck blaze and throat, rufous underparts, and a black bill with some red at the base. The legs and feet are bright red.[5] It is about 16 cm (6.3 in) long with a wingspan of 25 cm (10 in), and weighs 3446 g (1.21.7 oz). The flight of the Kingfisher is fast, direct and usually low over water. The short rounded wings whirr rapidly, and a bird flying away shows an electric-blue "flash" down its back.

The European kingfisher (alcedo atthis) is a bird of the waterside, since it feeds entirely upon aquatic animals. It has regular perches or stands from which it fishes. These may be a few inches or many feet above the water. It sits upright, its tail pointed downwards. It drops suddenly with a splash and usually returns at once with a struggling captive. The nest is a tunnel in a sandy bank, usually, though not always over water. Both birds excavate. Most incline upward for about three feet before the nesting chamber is reached. The six to seven or even more round white eggs are placed on a litter of fish bones and disgorged pellets. The eggs are pink. The first clutch is usually laid in April, but second broods are often in the nest at the end of July, and an exceptional case of young in early October is recorded.
