Moonscapes - 1978. Like a lot of the other Mercury jazz records from the late 70s, this release by the reed player from the Headhunters is a mix of outstanding funky jazz playing with smooth studio production. The sounds a little bit more polished than the Headhunters LPs, and the production is by Pat Gleeson, who was best known for his arp and synth playing in the mid 70s. Maupins playing is great throughout, and his pinched hard reed sound feels good on both the fusiony tracks and the smoother funk ones.

Entry from: Te Anau, New Zealand Entry Title: "The Drive from Lake Te Anua to Milford Sound" Entry: "We began the day with cereal and coffee alongside Lake Te Anau. The lake is the 2nd biggest in New Zealand and was formed by a glacier. We had a stroll around the lake and saw the sea planes that take off from the lake on their scenic flights around the fiords. We headed into the town centre and booked our cruise on the Milford Sound, before going into a local shop to look for gloves. We went into a shop that had a huge big turquoise bird statue outside its door. The bird is a Takahe, which was thought to be extinct until 1948. A climber found a few 100 of them and now they are a protected species and are flourishing, probably as they are so ugly no one wants to have their head mounted in their pub! We got a pair of gloves each and we were off down Route 94 to Milford Sound with our snow chains ready. It is a law to carry snow chains in your vehicle if you drive the Milford Sound road, as the weather can change rapidly. We had been briefed on how to use them, paid the 50 dollars extra for them, so we were secretly hoping to use them (well I was). Te Anau Downs was our first stop. 1973 Massive work from Eddie Henderson -- 2 spaced-out jazz classics that put him right up there with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock for pure 70s genius! The set kicks off with the very cosmic Realization -- a tripped-out set with Herbie on keyboards, Pat Gleeson on Arp and moog, Bennie Maupin on reeds, Buster Williams on bass, and Lenny White on drums -- all grooving together in a style thats some elements of Herbies work of the time, especially his later sides for Warner Brothers. The blend of players is magnificent -- and produces a really righteous sound thats picked up nicely by the album Inside Out, recorded slightly later in the same year. That set also features Maupin, Hancock, Gleeson, and Williams -- plus Billy Hart on drums and Bill Summers on percussion. Together, the albums represent one of the most fruitful periods in Eddie Hendersons career -- a freewheeling soul jazz era that was never to be duplicated on later albums!
