Quick explanation of the various parts: The bass line is supposed to be very repetitive. It mimics the ticking of a clock, and how time never stops but its not quite at the forefront all the time either. At around 1:05, a second pulse is added. This is the mothers interpretation of time; she, like most adults, believes that you must fit as much into life as possible, because time constrains you. It drones on much more than the initial bass line, because time is much more prevalent in her life. The first melody describes the little boys innocence. He was untouched by the time in the beginning of the piece, very much oblivious to the concept. Its more lighthearted than the rest, but there is a lurking darkness that taints it. The second melody is the winded runner lapped on the track. Not too much explanation needed here. The entire second half, past 1:05, is representative of the childs understanding of time. Initially, he believes a runner to be a cute metaphor, and takes pleasure in simply being ignorant to the concept of time. After 1:05 however, he begins to understand, and it piles up on him until it hits him. The break, and the final part, is symbolic of the sobering reality he feels when he realizes exactly what time is. Almost a "loss of innocence" theme. He realizes that he is perpetually getting older, and no matter what he does, he cant do anything to stop it.
