Faiz Ahmed Faiz is amongst the most famous poets of last century. Faiz, who was hounoured by Lenin Peace Prize in 1963, was seldom subjected to arrests by the right-wing pro-imperialist military regimes of Pakistan. Once, during the dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq, he was arrested and taken to the police station in front of the public. In this context, he wrote Aaj Bazar mein. The video starts with a mushairah (public recitation), where Faiz presents the poem, and describes its context. Then the video, with the melodious voice of Nayyara Noor in the background singing the verses of Faiz, shows the sufi culture of Pakistan, which was suppressed by the religious fundamentalist government of Zia-ul-Haq. Then, there are some clips of public floggings and public hangings of political dissidents, which were employed to ingrain terror in the people of Pakistan. Public floggings were a norm during Zias time. The video, then, takes us on a trip to a well-known red-light area of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This red-light area is in the neighbourhood of a very famous mosque, a contradiction unresolved.

Agosto 2007. Primer vídeo grabado nada más alcanzar la cima. El tiempo total estimado en ascender por su escalera los 112 metros fue de 25 minutos aprox. CABE MENCIONAR: la subida sin ningún tipo de protección (sólo la ayuda de las manos y los pies), la resistencia al viento (y el balanceo de un lado a otro de la Antena), el cansancio físico (un simple movimiento en falso y caes al vacío) y el cansancio psicológico (el mirar tanto arriba como abajo y ver que nunca se acaban los peldaños). ANÉCDOTAS: Tuve que atravesar con la cara un nido de cigüeña apenas a 5 metros antes de la cima (menos mal que el nido estaba vacío, pues no quisiera ver a los padres apareciendo por allí vigilando sus polluelos). Impresionantes las vistas y el tamaño del sombrero capacitivo ("el octógono"). La longitud de la escalera es tal que, una vez en la cima y mirando por el interior, por más que miraba hacia abajo no distinguía el final. NOTA ESENCIAL: La otra Torre o Antena que se aprecia al fondo, está a punto de caer debido al estado de abandono que sufre desde hace décadas. Ver segundo vídeo del descenso.

Next to "Ti Sento" this is my absolute favourite song of Matia Bazar. It was released 1983 and was included on their first album "Tango" This wonderful performance, from the italian show Elezioni Non Stop 1983, deserves to be on YouTube so enjoy this repost. Antonella Ruggiero looks absolutely fantastic here!
