From Borres you have to chose whether to take the riskier Hospitales route which has less signs (and God help you should fog set in) and go straight through to Berducedo or go via Peñaseita, staying the night at the albergue there (shown, with blue door), and then go up to Puerto del Palo at 1200m the following day and descend steeply to Berducedo. We chose the latter. Before arriving at Peñaseita we passed through Pola where we bought an amazingly big local cheese, at av gd price, which tasted like a very strong Brie. This we shared with other pilgrims along the way and lasted for ages! We gave some to Sebastian, a pilgrim cyclist, at the albergue and, later, he gave us 2 mini models of wiry pilgrims he´d made. The albergue had 12 bunk beds, could have been cleaner, specially the showers, nowhere to cook. However, it was lovely listening to the nearby stream at night, hear owls under the starry sky, play a game of Ludo before bed (!) and sleep like logs... The next day it was raining. The wind got up and we´d got a helluvan ascent to do. Teeth clenched, we battled our way up it, facing the elements but even more so upon reaching the summit where we encounteres howling gales and a hailstorm so strong it was blowing horizontally; I got really hit in the face by hailstones, practically blown off the summit, having to cling on to Mika not to fall down... so, at the top we were obliged to take refuge in a tiny chapel (but full of rubbish). As you will see from the pics, we ...

We met José from Madrid again last night and he was enthusiastically setting off up to La Mesa (little church), up over by the inevitable windturbines and down the steep and treacherous and, so the guide book says, "vertigo - inducing" descent. After our previous day´s nearly being blown off the summit at El Palo in the galeforce hailstorm we decided against this! Instead we took the slightly longer way round towards Grandas, using the cycle route. This meant sticking to the road but probably a good idea as it rained and rained when it didn´t pour. However, we still got some dark and cloudy views of seemingly endless mileage to walk! It was a long way but, eventually we rounded the mountain and came across the reservoir. Dark green and very large, it was a surprising change in scenery. We went into a little mirador through a cave entrance. From there we had good views across the reservoir and surrounding mountains. We then crossed the res wall to the other side and started the uphill slog - coming on to rain again - to Grandas. Just 2 kms before arriving at Grandas, we had to take shelter at a bus stop from the deluge! Met José, covererd in a black poncho mac, saying he looked like a "cucaracha!" He was cursing as, apart from the rain and wind, he had had few views from after La Mesa and as for the downhill the other side... it was one of those endless long zigzag slippery tracks, sodden, that leads you up and down the res thinking you´ve nearly arrived when you haven´t ...
