Augusto Boal (April 16, 1931 - May 2, 2009) After spending the past 2 weeks re-reading his books- i didnt expect to be putting up an obituary instead of a vlog. I found out today that he died on Saturday. Id been tagged by KazukiSeirei a couple of weeks ago for another 5 facts tag, and i offered to vlog on something that really inspires me instead. This is the man I intended to vlog on. His work is truly inspirational to me, and I think, so very useful for the times we live in. I studied the theatre forms of Augusto Boal for 2 years- doing practical street theatre, invisible theatre, community drama, Theatre in Conflict Resolution and other dramatherapy. I wanted to vlog about him and in particular, Invisible Theatre and how it works to empower people and create real social and political change. Ive had a load of little synchronicites that kept pointing me back to his work in the past month, & learned i had missed a workshop he himself held here in London just 4 weeks ago... so its a bit strange to hear hes died after I had been geeking out on his lifes work when i hadnt looked at it in 10 years! Augusto Boal was an innovative director from Brazil who developed new forms of theatre which act as powerful tools for the Activist, in the empowerment of people and the development of ideas and change. It is theatre by the people for the people. I wanted to vlog on one type of theatre style he developed as part of his Theatre of the Oppressed way of working. This form being Invisible Theatre. Its a hugely broad topic so forgive me for being long winded, but for those who ARE involved in activism, I wanted to explain it enough that you can walk away with ideas that can be used in your activism work. Im not one to make videos about my gear but these drums sound so great I had to put something out there. The drums you see in this video are Yamahas new PHX line. The shells are pretty thick at 11 ply and use a hybrid combination of woods. Jatoba, Kapur and Maple. The sizes are as follows: 22" x 16" Bass Drum 16" x 15" Floor Tom 14" x 13" Floor Tom 12" x 8" Rack Tom 10" x 7" Rack Tom 14" x 4" Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau Snare I have Remo Suede Emperors on the batter sides and Remo Clear Ambassadors on the resonant sides of each drum. Also a Remo Renaissance Powerstroke 3 on the Bass Drum batter side. All drums are finished in Matte Black with Chrome Hardware. When I first heard about these drums I wasnt 100% sure that Yamaha wasnt just hyping up a new product. After I finally got my hand on a set of them, I was totally convinced. These drums far exceed any other drum Ive ever played in terms of overall great sound at any dynamic level. The lows are insane! Not to mention the clean and articulate highs. They have a very open sound which they can get away with because they sound so great. Its really how a drumset is supposed to sound. The drums resonate very well together as an entire kit. No ringing toms every time you play the bass or snare drum. Thanks Yamaha for making my job a whole lot easier and an all around great playing experience! These drums rock!
