Entry from: Cangas, Spain Entry Title: "Along the Costa Vasca" Entry: "We had an easy day today to recover from all our strenuous walking. The bus took us along the Costa Vasca or Basque Coast from San Sebastian to Cangas de Onis. Our big event for the day would be spending a little time in Bilbao at the Guggenheim Museum. On the way we had our morning rest stop in the pretty town of Getaria right on the coast. When the Guggenheim foundation decided to expand beyond their base in New York, they hired architect Frank Gehry to build a museum in Europe. Ive read that his first few attempts to find a location were met with skepticism, but the city of Bilbao had been searching for a way to bring tourism to town to revive their economy, and they approached Gehry. Bilbao was previously known mainly for being the second largest Spanish port after Barcelona. Its located on a "ria" (you crossword puzzle fans will recognize this term for an inlet--similar to a fjord). Visitors are met at the entrance to the museum by The Puppy, a topiary sculpture of a terrier by Jeff Koons. It has a steel structure and an internal irrigation system. The Puppy was originally brought here for a temporary exhibit but the people of Bilbao fell in love with it and decided not to let it go. Some people feel that the museums ...
