On the journey to Chavin De Huantar, one of the oldest cult locations in Peru, theres the fascinating world of the Andes that seems to touch the clouds. Radiant colour and pure Nature are constant companions on the 109 kilometre route from Huarez to these ancient ruins. The settlement of Chavin De Huantar has a history that dates back 3000 years. Even today little is known of the exact way of life of the Chavin culture as no written history of it has been discovered. Thus, research is restricted to the archaeology that has been uncovered that also includes various stone images. Snakes, animals, and birds engraved in stone have been among the most commonly found images of this mysterious culture. Assisted by beautiful flat reliefs even today numerous temples and fortresses show the artistic talents of Chavin culture. During the first millennium AD, this seven hectare area was the most important place of pilgrimage in Peru. In the oldest section there are entrances to a subterranean world where an assortment of labyrinth-like passages and rooms extend down almost seven floors. The scant light that manages to find its way into the narrow passageways adds to the mysterious atmosphere of this ancient architectural masterpiece. Get a feel of one of the oldest ruins on the continent of South America. Chavin de Huantar is not well known, but the peopole who visit will be blown away by its mystery. Above ground its looks like a normal ruin. You konw the ones you see more often, some bricks some stones and encarvings. But when you go down you will be amazed by its ingenious tunnel systems and craftsmenship. Amazing statues will scare the hell out of you and knwoing that only a small percentage is open to the public, this UNESCO worldheritage site has still many secrets to unfold!

forestman.espacioblog.com En el "Monumento Natural del Souto da Retorta", también conocido como "eucaliptal de Chavín" es el reino de "El Abuelo", un ejemplar de Eucalyptus globulus que gracias a sus 75,2 metros cúbicos de madera esta considerado el árbol más grande de España y uno de los mas grandes de Europa, teniendo como único rival al famoso Karri Knight, otro eucalipto menos grueso pero mas alto y viejo que el Abuelo, un superviviente de los primeros eucaliptos que se plantaron en la Península Ibérica en el año 1866, en la ciudad portuguesa de Coimbra. Nuestro centenario protagonista fue plantado en el año 1880. Tiene una altura similar a la de la Torre de Hércules y el perímetro en su base es de 10,50 metros, siendo necesarios seis o siete personas para abarcarlo. El Abuelo de Chavín, no es el ejemplar más bonito, pues hubo que podarle grandes rama, y otras fueron partidas por los fuertes temporales . Tampoco es el ejemplar más alto de este conjunto monumental, que alberga los ejemplares más altos de España, con alturas próximas e incluso superiores a ochenta metros. Pero si que es el mas sobresaliente de esta masa, por ser el mas grueso, aun así, también hay eucaliptos más gruesos (pero no mas altos) que el abuelo, como el del palacio de Rubiáns, en Villagarcía, conocido como el Gordo de Rubianes.
