At first time Artà was first mentioned in 1232. The origin of the name is derived from "Gertan", the Arab word for garden. An outbreak of bubonic plague in 1820 caused a setback resulting in 1200 deaths. Artà is nestled in a large valley, at the foot of a small mountain. High on a hill overlooking the village is the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador dArta, built in the 14th century, surrounded by defensive walls.
