Video of Golan Heights, West Bank clashes as Israeli forces repel protesters02:11 MinutosIsraeli troops clashed with Arab protesters along three hostile borders on Sunday, leaving as many as 16 people dead and dozens wounded in an unprecedented wave of violence marking the anniversary of the mass displacement of Palestinians surrounding Israels establishment in 1948. Hundreds of Palestinians moved across the Syrian border into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. The border breach set off several hours of violent clashes in which at least four people were killed. At the Qalandiya checkpoint on the outskirts of Ramallah in the West Bank, Israeli troops rushed in to disperse protesters, leaving several wounded. Israels prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that he will vigorously defend his countrys borders after the mass infiltration from Syria. Violence marks Naksa in Golan Heights04:49 MinutosSyrian state television has reported that Israeli troops have shot dead 20 pro-Palestinian protesters at the Golan Heights frontier. The troops opened fire across the demarcation line when protesters marched towards a border fence in the Israeli-occupied area. Sundays protest was held on "Naksa Day, marking the 44th anniversary of the 1967 war, when Israel occupied the Golan Heights. Mark Regev, the Israeli government spokesman, said soldiers opened fire as a "last resort" after urging protesters not to cross the border. In East Jerusalem and the rest of the Palestinian Territories, there was relative calm. Some minor scuffles took place in the occupied West Bank. Al Jazeeras Andrew Simmons reports from East Jerusalem. |
