Entry from: La Hermida, Spain Entry Title: "Santander to La Hermida" Entry: "I choose today to finally get on the bike. I´ve put it off long enough. I have to admit to always being a bit nervous atthe start of a trip, but that always wears of rapidly. To avoid the inevitable waste of time trying to find my way through the suburbs avoiding motorways and to increase the distance I could go today I actually cheated a bit. I took the FEVE train as far as Torrelavegas. Only E2 and covered about 30km. It was very easy, loads of room on the train. The pension owner told me Torrelavegas was quite ugly, but from what I saw it looks very nice. A lovely central tree lined promenade where I got breakfast in a cafe and a lovely plaza. I asked directions to Potes of a passing gentleman and he was very helpful. He also said the route I was taking was "muy fuerte" , very tough. However I ignored his advice and went on. It was very tough, but very nice. I had to get over three passes, each approximately 600m high. It was getting dark when I reached La Hermida and I could not find any room in a pension. Decided to camp out. It was dark by the time I managed to find a small spot just off the main road in the gorge created by the adjacent river. En esta ocasión la ruta comienza en la agüera de Urdón hacia tresviso, la principal de las seis rutas que van hacia este pueblo, y el descenso lo realizamos por Reñonuevo, a través del canal hacia Urdón. PD:sobre este canal hay que decir, que la mayor parte de su trayecto transcurre con el canal a un lado y al otro, ahí va lo fuerte, con grandes precipios por el otro lado, y que a pesar de que han colocado un cordón de acero, a modo de quitamiedos, el paso hay que medirlo muy bien. Pero bueno, no os desanimeis, el paseo merece la pena.
