Es un castillo románico situado sobre la sierra de Loarre. Fue construido en el siglo XI por orden del rey Sancho III, para servir como avanzadilla desde la que organizar los ataques contra Bolea. Durante el siglo XII la zona deja de ser fronteriza y el castillo pierde su función inicial de avanzadilla contra las tierras musulmanas. En el siglo XV, la población que vivía a los pies del castillo se traslada a la actual villa de Loarre, reutilizando materiales de la fortaleza.

Estamos ante el mejor y más importante castillo románico de toda la Península Ibérica. Asentamiento de origen ibérico y después punto estratégico romano, mientras que de la dominación musulmana poco se conoce, si bien se supone que en los siglos IX y X, Loarre sería una población mozárabe sujeta a Bolea, la más importante plaza musulmana de la Sotonera, que se convertiría en el principal rival del posterior castillo de Loarre, y que sería la plaza más fuerte de los musulmanes en la zona, aguantando tras la caída de Huesca. Loarre fue incorporado al reino de Sancho el Mayor, constituyendo un valioso enclave, pronto fortificado frente a la Sotonera totalmente musulmana y frente a la poderosa fortaleza de Bolea. Está segura la existencia del castillo de Loarre durante el reinado de Sancho el Mayor gracias al único documento que se ha conservado original de la cancillería del rey navarro. Se guarda en el Archivo de la Catedral de Huesca y se refiere a la donación de las villas altoaragonesas de Centenero y Salamañana (hoy pardinas, cerca de Anzánigo), hecha por aquel monarca a favor del influyente conde Sancho Galíndez procedente de la Garcipollera, con fecha de 14 de abril de 1035. Cuando murió el rey Sancho el Mayor de Navarra y sus dominios fueron repartidos entre sus cuatro hijos, correspondió a Ramiro I el reino de Aragón y al hermano de éste, Gonzalo, el de Sobrarbe-Ribagorza. Our objective was the castle of Loarre, sited dramatically on a hillside overlooking the fertile farmlands of the Ebro River basin. The castle was first conceived in the early 11th century when Sancho el Mayor, King of Navarre (which included the county of Aragon) started the fortifications as part of his strategy to retake lands from the Moors. One of the dominant themes of this Adventure is the Reconquest. Moors crossed from North Africa early in the 8th century. By the end of the century, nearly all the Iberian Peninsula was in their grasp, and they were only one history-changing battle away from crossing the Pyrenees and dominating France. The Reconquest was the response of isolated Christian kingdoms in the north towards their new Islamic overlords. Entry from: Loarre, Spain Entry Title: "Castillo de Loarre" Entry: "Hola! Yesterday we made the drive from Cadaques to Loarre, a teeny little town near the Castillo de Loarre, an 11th century castle. The drive was long (8 hours), and mountainous (we chose the less direct route). Callista is usually a trooper, but about 30 minutes into her second movie on the laptop, she started feeling ill. I had been a little carsick for about an hour. Finally, she could have no more. GET HER A BAG, and PULL OVER! Her pride was damaged a bit, after a little while more, she was no worse for the wear. We pulled off the side of the road at a spot ovelooking a dam and had a nice picnic of strawberries, chorizo & queso baguettes and vino. Callista couldnt stop talking, so we knew she was better. We finally pulled into Loarre at about 7pm. A long day. We checked into the only hotel in town "Hospederia de Loarre", and got a room. I think we were the only people in the hotel, and the restaurant (which is supposed to be very good) was closed. So after unpacking a bit we headed to town. It was an early dinner for spain, but we got to a restaurant around 8pm. we didnt want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with no open dining options, so we went early.
