En su afán por investigar nuevos métodos de trabajo respetuosos con el medioambiente, Bodegas Regalía de Ollauri se ha convertido en la primera bodega del mundo en utilizar la energía procedente de la tierra: la geotermia, para la producción de sus caldos. Gracias al uso de esta fuente de energía renovable, el sistema de elaboración vinícola de Regalía de Ollauri es, en la actualidad, el menos contaminante del planeta. La firma riojana Sapje, con una larga trayectoria en investigación y aplicación de la geotermia, ha sido la encargada de desarrollar este proyecto en la Bodega. Un proyecto pionero en el sector vinícola mundial que reconoce el compromiso de Regalía y Sapje por luchar contra el cambio climático: el uso de la geotermia elimina las emisiones de CO2 directas a la atmósfera y minimiza las emisiones totales. La Agencia de Desarrollo Económico de La Rioja (ADER) y el Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI) han respaldado la realización del proyecto, que comenzó a gestarse en noviembre de 2008. La geotermia es una energía totalmente limpia que se almacena bajo la superficie de la tierra en forma de calor. La temperatura estable de la tierra es una realidad que se conoce desde hace cientos de años; por este motivo, para aprovechar ese calor procedente del subsuelo, las bodegas y calados se construían bajo tierra.
