El río Mandeo nace en los montes de Sobrado dos Monxes, en las cumbres de la sierra de A cova da Loba, y desemboca en Betanzos, formando en su desembocadura la Marisma de Betanzos. En sus 56 kilómetros de recorrido recibe a numerosos afluentes: el Deo, el Porto, el Lombaos, el Dombrete, el Ramalleiro, el Lentemil, el Portabenzos, el Zarzo, el Mendo...por lo que es un río con un caudal abundante. Este elevado caudal permitió que Betanzos fuese un importante puerto marítimo- fluvial hasta el siglo XVI. El lugar y coto de pesca de Chelo, que analizaremos aquí en detalle, es un tramo muy concreto de este río. Se encuentra cercano a Betanzos, en un valle muy encajado en el sector de A Espenuca. Cuenta con un Aula de naturaleza que nos propone un itinerario ambiental por el río Mandeo muy interesante. Gran parte de la información utilizada para este análisis proviene de hecho, de sus guías. Desde el punto de vista geomorfológico es muy interesante el encajamiento del río Mandeo a la altura de A Espenuca, un macizo de rocas mucho más duras que las de los alrededores. Con el paso del tiempo, la fuerza del agua (con la posible ayuda de la existencia de una pequeña falla) fue abriendo un cañón para atravesarlo. Es en este tramo donde el río Mandeo alcanza una de las pendientes más pronunciadas de su lecho pues tiene que salvar un importante desnivel. Si miramos al río con atención podemos observar distintas huellas que ha dejado y continúa dejando la importante erosión del agua ...
