Molly Picon sings "Abi Gezunt" 1938 Yiddish film

02:35 Minutos
From the 1938 Yiddish film MAMELE Lovely frothy and funny number, penned by Abraham Ellstein, in this 1938 film, directed by Joseph Green. A sort of Cinderella story - put-upon Molly Picon the "little mother" sings "Abi Gezunt" - "As long as youre healthy" a bisl zun, a bisl regn, a ruik ort dem kop tsu legn, abi gezunt, ken men gliklekh zayn. a shukh a zok, a kleyd on lates, in keshene a dray, fir zlotes, abi gezunt, ken men gliklekh zayn. di luft iz fray far yedn glaykh, di zun zi shaynt far yedn eynem, orem oder raykh. a bisl freyd, a bisl lakhn, a mol mit fraynd a shnepsl makhn, abi gezunt ken men gliklekh zayn. eyner zukht ashires, eyner zukht gevures, aynnemen di gantse velt. eyner meynt dos ganse glik hengt nor op in gelt. zoln ale zukhn, zoln ale krikhn, nor ikh trakht bay mir, ikh darf dos af kapores, vayl dos glik shteyt bay mayn tir. "A bit of sun, a bit of rain, a peaceful place to lay your head so long as youre healthy, you can be happy. A shoe, a sock, an outfit without patches, three or four measly coins in your pocket so long as youre healthy, you can be happy. The air is free, equal for all; the sun shines for everyone, whether rich or poor. A little rejoicing, a little laughter, some schnapps with a friend once in a while so long as youre healthy, you can be happy. Some look for riches, some look for power, to conquer the whole world. Some think that all happiness depends only on money. Let them all search, let them all scrounge. But I think to myself ...

Molly Picon in The Wedding Scene from Yidl Mitn Fidl 1936 Yiddish film

06:46 Minutos
from the 1936 Yiddish film YIDL MITN FIDL. This was filmed once again in Kazimierz, Poland, using local inhabitants as extras. It took over thirty consecutive hours to film, and the food had to be kosher of course as the locals used were all Orthodox Jews. As the filming went on, they ate, and for the successive shots of the table the food had to be replenished. The poverty stricken guests just couldnt understand what was happening, as they thought they had been invited to a real wedding. When one woman asked why so much food they explained that it wasnt a real wedding - only a film. It is possible she had never seen a film, for she said: "Why didnt you tell me that before? With so much food, I could have brought my daughter to get married for real. She has a chassen (bridegroom) but we have no money for a dowry to make a proper wedding." Molly suspected her husband (Jacob Kalich) may have given the woman the money, as later she smiled at Picon and said "Are you lucky to have such a rich husband." Its a sobering thought to think what would have happened to these people only a few short years later.

Molly Picon: Life Is A Dance 1938 Yiddish film

07:45 Minutos
from the 1938 Yiddish film "MAMELE" (With apologies if I have the Yiddish incorrect in the title) The great star of Yiddish theatre and film Mollie Picon showing that she was much more than an accomplished commedienne in this clip. Here she reveals her talent for character work, by turns funny and touching, in this delightful song from her 1938 film directed by Joseph Green. The music was by Abraham Ellstein. The young man in the film is Edmund Zayenda. Miss Picon was born in New York in 1898 and died in 1992. Although very well known to those familiar with her work in Yiddish stage, radio and film, and later on television, she will be remembered by a wider audience for her performance as Yente the matchmaker in the 1972 film of Fiddler On the Roof. Often referred to as "The Yiddish Helen Hayes" the great American actress told her, on learning this, that "From now on, Molly, I will be proud to be called the Shikseh Molly Picon"! Mamele was the last Yiddish film to be made in Warsaw, Poland. Miss Picon writes of how glad they were to leave that country when they finished filming, as anti-Semitic feeling there was coming to a head, just prior to the war. In her work, Molly Picon showed us all that Life is, indeed, a dance.
