Spain - one of my favourite countries.... One destination I have wanted to explore for a long time is the beautiful island of Mallorca. So from May 20 to 31, 2009 I had the opportunity to get to know a good portion of this special Mediterranean island. Popular as a package tourism destination since the 1960s, I was more interested in Mallorcas natural and cultural treasures which can be found away from the massive hotel developments that dominate some parts of the coastline. My favourite area of the island became the north: the rugged, relatively untouched Serra de Tramuntana mountain chain that runs along the islands north coast from east to west. With my little rental car I was able to get into the tiniest villages and I ended up visiting virtually every major settlement on the Costa Nord. My favourite spot become Soller, a popular tourist town in the heart of the Tramuntana region, which has long been famous for its citrus plantations and its position among Mallorcas highest mountains. The Puig Major reaches an altitude of 1445 metres (over 4700 feet) and Soller is embedded in a wide valley surrounded by majestic mountains. Soller is also the final terminal of the Palma to Soller vintage electric train. In addition, Soller is connected with a historic streetcar to the harbour town of Port de Soller which lies about 4 km away. Some of my other favourites included Pollenca and Cap Formentor on the east side of the island; Banyalbufar and Sa Calobra on the steep ...

Entry from: Port de Pollenca, Spain Entry Title: "Day Two" Entry: "Checking out of the hotel, I had to question the bill, as it was too much - my Best Western reservation had not come through in time and they had charged me at a higher rate. I should have double-checked the rate when I checked in. I had already booked a hotel room in Port Pollença for the next night, so had the rest of the day to go to Soller on the train and back before driving up to the northeast coast. I stopped in a post office to buy stamps for postcards, before heading for central Palma. The clerk was amazingly un-geared-up for me - the doddery tourist, in seeming not to speak English at all. Locating the train station was not easy, not least because I had no reference point to start from - I had turned, twisted, and stopped so many times, I had lost all my bearings. Asking a man which road I was on, then tracking back to the coast highway, led me to the right area. Driving in Palma lay somewhere between driving in Bristol and driving in London, in the danger stakes. This made navigation near impossible and despair loomed. Stopping to get my bearings, I saw a break in the cityscape looking like that carved out by a railway track, which it was. Hooray! I had about an hours wait for the train, so had a coffee and bought some ...
