Vasils classical training began at the age of 5,and included attendance at one of the oldest music high schools in South East Europe, Stevan Mokranjac in Belgrade (prof. Ljubinka Hadzi-Jovancic). It was his interest in jazz, however, that won him full scholarship to attend the Interlochen Arts Camp for two summers in a row and afforded him the opportunity to study and perform with Milt Jackson, Curtis Fuller, and Bayron Stripling among others.

Here it is! (Take 393 :-) The third movement, Allegro Solemne, from La Catedral by Barrios played by me, Samantha Muir. La Catedral was written in 1914 after Barrios visited the Cathedral of San Jose in Montevideo, Uraguay. One day Barrios was passing by the church when he heard the music of JS Bach being played on the great organ. He went inside to listen to the music. The 2nd movement, Andante Religioso, reflects this experience. After listening to the music he returned to the busy, bustling street full of light and movement... This is captured in the 3rd movement, Allegro Solemne. The work was originally just 2 movements but in 1938 Barrios wrote the beautiful Preludio Saudade for his wife Gloria and decided to add it to La Catedral as a 1st movement. The movement adds a prayer-like stillness to the work. La Catedral is my favourite guitar work. I think of it as beauty and the beast - the 1st and 2nd movements are "beauty" and the 3rd movement is a real beast to play! Phew! :-)

I Dream of You by Per-Olov Kindgren, (YT AndanteLargo) played by me, Samantha Muir. I thought this piece was the perfect tribute to my little Russian Dwarf Hamster, Iggy (Igor Stravinsky) who has gone to the big hamster wheel in the sky. He was only small but he was full of character and ever so cute! Ill miss you little friend. For score and tabs please go to Per-Olovs website. www.per-olovkindgren.com For more information about me, or to buy my CD or book, please go to my website www.samanthamuir.com
