Entry from: Girona, Spain and Canary Islands Entry Title: "Costa Brava - Tossa de Mar, Girona" Entry: "I take a bus to Tossa de Mar, a small beach resort on the way to France. It is along the Costa Brava where the hills meet the coast making for some dramatic landscape. My thought was to use a luggage check, explore the town. I have a reservation for a hostel in Girona for the evening so I have to catch the 5:00 bus. Well, apparently much of Western Europe lacks baggage lockers. I go to a hotel and they refuse to take it for the day (even for a tip). I walk to the beach, use a flight bag to cover it, lock it and use a special steel cord that I have to attach it to a parking chain, just below a bridge. Anyone with a sharp knife and intent could steal it. But, it is so large that it would be very obvious. I change clothes at the beach and spend the day walking around. The highlight is a 12th-century walled town along the hill and the coastline. I walk along the top of the wall which goes most of the way around the old town. At the top, I stop at the snack shop for a beer and eat the picnic I had prepared. Very relaxing watching the boats go by. I look at the bridge from afar when I can to see if my bag is still there. I pick it up at the end of the day. No problems. Girona is another town with ...

Tossa de Mar (Catalan pronunciation: [?tos? ð? ?mar]) is a municipality in Catalonia, Spain, located on the Costa Brava, about 103 kilometres north of Barcelona and 100 kilometres south of the French border. It is accessible through Girona Airport, some distance north. There is ample evidence of settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, and it is believed that the area has been continuously populated since that time. Between the 4th century BC and the 1st century BC appeared the first settlementsof the Iberians, followed shortly after by the Romans in the 1st century. In 966 Tossa was ceded by Count Miró of Barcelona to the Abbey of Ripoll. Some two centuries later, in 1187 Tossa was granted its charter by the Abbot of Ripoll, coinciding with the building of a church atop Mount Guardí, the remnants of which can still be seen today. Sometime in the 12th century the mediaeval town was walled off and a castle was built on the highest point of Mt. Guardí, this castle was to be subsequently replaced by a wind mill, and this in turn by a lighthouse which is still operational. By the year 1500 the first houses were built extra-muros to accommodate population growth. This process was greatly accelerated during the 17th and 18th centuries, shaping an urban configuration which was to remain practically unchanged until the arrival of mass tourism in the 1950s. In 1989 Tossa de Mar was the first place in the world to the declare itself an Anti-Bullfighting City.
