Entry from: Santa Cruz, Ecuador Entry Title: "Puerto Ayora and the Charles Darwin Research Cente" Entry: "I sleep really well on the boat. It doesnt matter if we are anchored or moving across the open ocean; out at 9:30, bright eyed at 5:45. This was a day in port on Santa Cruz Island in the not-so-little town of Puerto Ayora. In the morning we took the zodiacs to the dock and then taxis to the Charles Darwin Research Station. The biggest treat came 1st thing. Ben found an old friend, a scientist, who took us into a preservation lab. We saw preserved tortoise shells as well as specimens of many animals, fish and rodents. It was great to have the "behind the scenes" look. Then we did a walk outdoors which included the pens where they raise tortoise to the hawk-proof age of 3 years before releasing them on the appropriate island. Of the 14 original species, 11 remain, but introduced species like goats and dogs were destroying the young so all that was left was middle-aged and older. When they figured that out they began to raise young in a safe environment. Goats have been eradicated and there is now an intense spay/neuter program. At the Darwin Center we also got to see a famous turtle, Lonesome George, thought to be the sole survivor of his species of Pinta Island tortoise. So far he has not ... |

Entry from: Puerto Ayora, Ecuador Entry Title: "Isabela" Entry: "We have to be up and out before breakfast this morning and, with our mild hangovers, bitterly regret not being better organized the night before and buying snacks and water. We fear that nowhere will be open but eventually find a cafe just opening up where we are able to buy bottles of water and the most humoungous fruit salad with yoghurt and granola I have ever laid eyes on. Our tourboat isnt in the most obvious location and its lucky that I am on the ball and making prudent enquiries or wed have missed the boat. There are probably about 15 people making the crossing to Isabela and its a bit cramped on our 3 hour trip across the choppiest of waters; the big drops making us think better of all that yoghurt weve just consumed. I forget our tour guides name but he is a pleasant fellow, if a little too interested in seeking out Emily throughout the course of the day. On the other side we meet our tour bus which is an open-sided contraption with bench like seats that looks like it belongs on safari. First stop; flamingo lake - the third and last location we will visit during our time in South America where sightings of flamingos are promised and this time we are not disappointed. There are only two of them and they are in the ... |

"Galapgos Tales" Simeones photos around Puerto Ayora, Ecuador (mv darwin galapagos)02:12 MinutosPreview of Simeones blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor? TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Puerto Ayora, Ecuador Entry Title: "Galapgos Tales" Entry: "Simply stunning! Have just arrived in Puerto Ayora the largest town on the Galapagos Islands (and probably the only place to find an internet cafe on this part of the trip) Its now day 6 of my trip and its fair to say everything is living up to expectations - and then some.. So lets start at the beginning. Id forgotten how long the flight to Miami actually is, I still never understand why they go north then swing down over the States rather than just ploughing diagonally acrosss, but there we go, Physics was never my strong point!! Miami airport was an absolute joke. I was seriously worried about missing my connecting flight. These new Homeland security measures are understandable, but the process needs looking at. I was 4th in the queue going through customs and it took me over an hour to be processed. Fingerprinting, retinal scans and endless questions - I was only transiting as well! Fortunately I just about made the next flight and was soon on my way to Quito - with a window seat! Id been told the approach to Quito airport was stunning and theyre not wrong. It was just getting dark as we landed and the lights in between the Andes mountains looked fantastic. Traffic in this city is suitably manic, not sure there are any ... |

"Galapagos Magic" Jamie_petes photos around Puerto Ayora, Ecuador (magical galapagos islands)02:37 MinutosPreview of Jamie_petes blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor? TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Puerto Ayora, Ecuador Entry Title: "Galapagos Magic" Entry: "Españolaaso excited as we checked in to Quito National Airport for our flights out to the Galapagos ... that is until we were confronted by the apparent chaos of the check-in system! Fortunately our driver from the excellent Quito Swissotel had seen it many times before and he marched us through the process like a seasoned pro. Ignoring queues he took us to the special Galapagos security control and on to the check-in desk (meaning that, having been through security, we were then free to do as we pleased with our bags until we checked them in!) Very surprised to see that our AeroGal flight was in an aging Boeing 727 ... that had certainly not got any quieter over the years! This one still bore some old North West Airlines logos! En route our flight called into the coastal city of Guayaquil to drop off and pick up passengers and within 30 minutes we were on our way again. Our destination airport is the island of Baltra, built by the US during WWII to protect the western approaches to the Panama C****. Apparently there were 4000 US service personnel based on the small island, which came to be known by the soldiers and airmen as The Rock. History has it that not a single shot was fired in anger. Disembarkation involved the usual ... |

Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor? TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Puerto Ayora, Ecuador Entry Title: "Galapagos Islands" Entry: "Becs 13/5: YAY we finally made it to the Galapagos Islands after a bit of a rocky start. It was a 2 hour flight from Guayaquil which I pretty much slept all the way, so so tired after last nights adventures to Colombia. The airport is this tiny little building and before you can get through to retrieve your bags each person must pay US$100 to enter the islands, yep the beginning of a very very expensive couple of weeks ahead. It was a 5 mins bus to the Port on the Island of Baltra (where the airport is) then onto a little boat to cross to Santa Cruz Island then 45mins bus to the main town of Puerto Ayora. Here we grabbed some lunch then Mark headed to the internet cafe with all our bags and I went on the search for last minute boat deals. After quite a bit of search and visiting every travel agent in town and even the odd person at the docks it seems that everything is pretty much booked for the next week. We took a chance at getting some last minute deals and it hasn´t paid off :-(. So we checked into the cheapest hotel we could find at US$25/nt and went for a wonder of the town and then a much needed beer while we contemplated our next 10 days of days trips! Becs 14/5: Up early, too hot to sleep and we´re too cheap to get ... |
