Entry from: Bunol, Spain Entry Title: "Day 5 - Bunol (La Tomatina)" Entry: "Was awake at 6am and to be ready for the bus at 7am, dress in our sexy white clothes. We headed off from the hostel at 7 minus a couple of the group that hadnt managed to drag themselves out of bed around to the buses and then proceeded to wait an hour and a half for the bus to show up. After it finally arrived it was a quick 45 minutes trip up to Bunol where the festival was being held. The bus parked up and we all headed down into town along with 40000 other people all looking to get the best position for the biggest food fight ever!! I randomly met up with Kim who I worked with in Melbourne as she was pushed along by the crowd, and a random girl from Sydney, Kelly. So along with Beks and Nick we all soaked up the atmosphere and avoided flying t-shirts as people tried climbing the greasy pole to start knock off the ham to get the festival started. Finally someone managed it and that was when the first of five trucks headed down the main street and dumped tonnes and tonnes of overripe tomoatoes in the street, which after being thrown time and time again just became soup. Entry from: Bunol, Spain and Canary Islands Entry Title: "La Tomatina Festival" Entry: "Why is it, that whenever we told people we were going (or had been) to Tomitina - the tomato festival - they shook their head and laughed??? For some reason, Gary got in his head, (Ill blame him), that wed go to Bunol to participate in the world famous tomato fesitval. This basically involves throwing very ripe tomatoes at each other, that of which is supplied on big trucks to the crowds of partygoers lining the main street (very narrow might I add). Im going to tell you my experience of it, from a different vantage point ..... ie: not absolved in the midst of it, but close enough to take some gruesome photos, and get pelted with the odd tomato or two. ..... We parked about a 15 minute walk away, mainly because the streets were blocked off, and as we walked through the town every cafe and bar was full, with a melting pot of every imaginable costume mingled of course, with the old spanish men having their morning drinks, (why let the mere fact that 40000 people are coming for a party, spoil their ritual). As we walked along the streets with the crowds, it started to become quite obvious that there were very few children around - we did begin to wonder, but ploughed on ahead anyway.
