De son vrai nom Lavelle McKinnie Duggan, La Velle partage avec Rhoda Scott ses origines américaines. Elle excella dans des comédies musicales, accompagna Dee Dee Bridgewater et Liz McComb, fit partie les orchestres jazz de Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson et Quincy Jones. Rhoda Scott débuta chez Count Basie à Harlem. Elle possède un talent complet qui la rend aussi à laise dans la musique classique que dans le jazz, dans les gospels ou les blues.
